Nine people have died from leptospirosis in Quezon City from January 1 to June 18, 2026, according to the latest data from the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (QCESD). The city has recorded a total of 66 leptospirosis cases during this period.

Age and Gender Breakdown

Of the 66 cases, 36 or 55 percent are individuals aged 31 years and above. The report also shows that more males were affected, with 55 cases or 83 percent of the total, while 11 cases or 17 percent were recorded among females.

Seasonal Risk and Transmission

According to the Department of Health, leptospirosis is among the common diseases that increase during the rainy season. The disease is transmitted through the urine of infected animals such as rats, cattle, pigs, and dogs. When contaminated urine mixes with floodwater, rivers, canals, or lakes, the bacteria can enter the body through the mouth, eyes, or open wounds.

Symptoms and Precautions

Symptoms of leptospirosis include fever, body aches, rashes, and yellowing of the skin and eyes. However, some cases may be asymptomatic. As a precaution, the QCESD urged the public to avoid wading, swimming, or playing in floodwater as much as possible. Residents are advised to use protective gear such as boots and gloves when going out in flooded areas. For those who cannot avoid exposure, authorities recommend immediate consultation at the nearest health center for appropriate medication, including doxycycline, which is used to prevent leptospirosis.
