DSWD-Davao deploys Doctor Dogs for therapy at girls home

The Department of Social Welfare and Development-Davao Region (DSWD-Davao) has begun deploying its Doctor Dogs under the Angel Pets Project at the Home for Girls and Women in Davao City. The initiative aims to provide psychosocial support through animal-assisted therapy.

First Session with Five Dogs

DSWD-Davao deployed the Doctor Dogs on June 27, 2026, at the Home for Girls and Women, where five dogs participated in the first Alaga session. During the session, the dogs bonded with the facility's clients, offering comfort and companionship.

Merlinda A. Paragamac, assistant regional director of DSWD-Davao, expressed gratitude to the pet owners for their support and partnership. She noted that through collaboration, they were able to provide psychosocial support and hope to clients. Their voluntary participation brought immense joy, comfort, and positive experiences to beneficiaries.

Animal-Assisted Therapy Goals

“The activity aims to provide psychosocial support through animal-assisted therapy, promoting emotional well-being, reducing stress and anxiety, and giving beneficiaries a positive experience in a safe and enjoyable environment,” DSWD said.

Earlier, 10 dogs were identified for the DSWD Angel Pets Project Assisted Therapy in the region. Temperament testing evaluated the dogs’ behavior and ability to safely interact with diverse clients, including children, women, senior citizens, and other vulnerable sector members. Approximately 13 dogs participated, and about 10 passed the assessment, earning recognition as “Doctor Dogs.”

Supporting Survivors of Abuse

DSWD-Davao stated in a previous press conference that these specially trained dogs would support the healing of survivors of abuse, neglect, and exploitation in the region. The Angel Pets Project was first implemented in Metro Manila, including facilities like Marillac Hills, before expanding to Metro Cebu and the Davao Region in March 2026. Under the program, Doctor Dogs visit residents to provide a calming, non-judgmental presence that helps them open up during the healing process.
