The Ricardo L. Maningo Memorial Hospital on Camotes Island, Cebu, has acquired new electrocautery machines that will significantly improve surgical services for local residents. These devices allow surgeons to cut tissue while simultaneously sealing blood vessels during operations, reducing bleeding and improving visibility in the surgical field.
Enhanced Surgical Capacity
According to Dr. Nikki Catalan, health consultant for the Cebu Provincial Government, the new equipment enhances the hospital's capacity to provide safe and effective surgical care. This means patients no longer need to travel to mainland Cebu for procedures that can now be performed locally.
The electrocautery machines are particularly useful in controlling bleeding during surgeries, which improves patient outcomes and reduces the risk of complications. The technology is widely used in various surgical specialties, including general surgery, gynecology, and orthopedics.
Impact on Local Healthcare
Before this acquisition, patients requiring electrocautery-assisted procedures had to be referred to hospitals in Cebu City, incurring additional costs and travel time. The new machines are expected to benefit hundreds of patients annually on the island, which has a population of over 100,000.
Dr. Catalan emphasized that this upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure in the province's island communities. The hospital administration has also arranged training for surgical staff to ensure proper use of the equipment.
