The Cebu City Police have issued a warning to the public about a new modus operandi involving a man who pretends to be a rent collector sent by the building owner to collect payments from tenants or store owners.
Incident in Barangay Guadalupe
In a recent incident in Barangay Guadalupe, a store fell victim to the scam. The suspect claimed he was authorized to collect two months' rent and received P4,500 from the victim. He even carried a logbook listing supposed payers, which convinced the victim.
However, when the victim took a photo of the man, he suddenly fled. It was then discovered that the victim had likely been scammed. Police investigations revealed another victim who fell for the same scheme.
Police Response and Advice
PLt. Col. Franco Rodul Oriol, deputy city director for administration of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), stated that measures are being implemented to identify and apprehend the suspect.
The public is advised not to immediately trust individuals claiming to be rent collectors. They should verify the person's identity and coordinate with the building owner. The police also suggest calling the police hotline or going to the nearest police station if any suspicious transaction occurs.
Mayor's Statement
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival supported the police warning, noting that with the city's population rising to 1.4 million, various crime schemes emerge. He urged the public to remain vigilant. "Do not trust immediately if you have doubts. Call the police right away," the mayor said.
The mayor also expressed confidence in the police force, citing a decrease in street crime in recent months due to increased police visibility.
