Blind Autistic Pianist Captivates Mall Audiences with Musical Gift
Elis Angeles describes her son, Kyle Paolo Angeles, as "always extremely happy and excited" whenever he plays his favorite music at the Mall Atrium of SM City Telabastagan in the City of San Fernando. This 24-year-old pianist, who is blind and has mild autism, has turned his challenges into a source of inspiration for countless mallgoers.
Early Start and Self-Taught Mastery
Kyle began playing the piano at just four years old, demonstrating an innate talent that flourished despite his disabilities. Through sheer determination and self-teaching, he mastered the instrument at an exceptionally young age. "Just say the title or sing a portion of the lyrics, and he can already play it beautifully," Elis shared, highlighting his remarkable auditory skills.
Pandemic Inspiration and Mall Performances
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Elis encouraged Kyle to play a piano placed at the event center of SM Telabastagan. Since then, he has become a regular visitor, interpreting songs that span classical, OPM (Original Pilipino Music), and pop genres. His performances have impressed audiences of all ages, turning the mall into a stage for his musical expressions.
Challenges and Unwavering Support
Elis calls Kyle a "gift from the Virgin Mary" but admits that raising him has not been easy due to the many challenges posed by his physical disabilities. "But I never complained to God," she said, reflecting her resilient spirit. The support from SM City Telabastagan has been crucial, with mall manager Lana Erroba stating they fully back Kyle, even allowing him to busk inside the mall.
Community Impact and Recognition
Kyle is welcome to play the mall's first-floor piano and has a tip box for donations from appreciative listeners. He has also become a regular performer at mall events, tapped by SM Telabastagan executives for his talent. Elis expressed gratitude for the mall's assistance with Kyle's financial and medical needs. One senior citizen who regularly listens to him noted, "He is a gifted pianist. He can play the song on the piano just right after listening to it once. We look for him when he is not around."
This story underscores how Kyle's musical abilities transcend his disabilities, bringing joy to his community and showcasing the power of perseverance and support.
