Hannah Kolecheril Triumphs as Mutya ng Dabaw 2026 with Message of Authenticity
In a stunning victory, 19-year-old Biology student Hannah Kolecheril has been crowned Mutya ng Dabaw 2026, emerging victorious from a field of 20 candidates after a rigorous competition held on March 20, 2026. The Filipino-Indian resident of Barangay Buhangin captivated judges and audiences alike, embodying the spirit of a modern Gandabawenya and securing the prestigious title.
An Unexpected Win Fueled by Persistence
Kolecheril, a second-year Biology student, expressed surprise at her win, especially after missing out on minor awards during the pageant. In a heartfelt Facebook post, she shared her journey of determination, stating, "That is why I kept showing up, again and again—not because I had everything, but because I refused to give up with nothing. And in that persistence, I found something beautiful." She emphasized that her success was not about perfection but about relatability and empathy for ordinary struggles.
A Reign Focused on Presence and Empowerment
In her acceptance speech, Kolecheril outlined a vision for her reign centered on authenticity and support. "My reign will not be about perfection; it will be about presence," she declared. "I will use my voice to remind young women that their worth is not measured by titles, achievements, or how far ahead they seem compared to others. I will create spaces where they feel seen, heard, and supported; where their struggles are not something to hide, but something to grow through." She encouraged women to embrace imperfection as a sign of growth rather than weakness.
Advocacies and Platform Expansion
Leveraging her background in Biology, Kolecheril plans to expand her advocacy on substance abuse awareness and promote sustainability initiatives. During media interviews, she highlighted the importance of using her platform to foster meaningful conversations, particularly on political and social issues. "And that is my role as Mutya ng Dabaw, to have that engaged dialogue because politics will haunt us in our wages, our fuel, and our education. And we must talk about politics like it's a life and death situation because Filipino lives—no, human lives—are quite literally on the line," she asserted.
Challenging Pageant Format and Viral Moments
This year's Mutya ng Dabaw pageant introduced an expanded preliminary interview round, featuring segments like Emoji Cue, Mutya-to-Mutya, and TaranTanong, which tested candidates' wit, personality, and views on social issues. Kolecheril's remarks on women's empowerment during these interviews went viral online, resonating with many during Women's Month celebrations. She welcomed the response, emphasizing the need to reject objectification and strengthen respect for women.
Her victory was sealed during the coronation night with a compelling final answer, where she proposed using Davao City's culture of security as a model for global peace amid conflicts in the Middle East. She underscored education as the foundation for peace and dialogue.
Royal Court and Community Advocacies
Joining Kolecheril in the royal court are four Gandabawenyas, each advancing unique community service advocacies:
- Joanna Ubas, crowned Diwa ng Dabaw, is an interdisciplinary studies student and athlete aiming to amplify marginalized voices through digital storytelling.
- Christine Bermudo, named Sinag ng Dabaw, is a lawyer and accountant promoting the Batang May Boses program for children's legal literacy.
- Cerlyn Cabanit, awarded Pag-asa ng Dabaw, advocates for research-driven literacy via Project Kaalam.
- Robynn Lee, crowned Patnubay ng Dabaw, focuses on women's reproductive health awareness, inspired by her experience with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
