The hall at PAREF Springdale International School resonated with the poignant notes of a piano, creating an atmosphere that was both sorrowful and uplifting. This was not merely a concert but a heartfelt memorial. Two months after the untimely death of Kingston Ralph Ko Cheng, his family gathered at his former school to ensure his love for music would echo forever.
A Lasting Tribute Through Music
In a deeply emotional act, the Cheng family presented a piano to the PAREF Springdale International School Music Club. Kingston, a devoted alumnus known for his "quiet determination," is now immortalized through this instrument. By entrusting his piano to aspiring students, the family has transformed a profound loss into a wellspring of lasting motivation, enhancing the school's music education for years to come.
Words of Love and Hope
During the Year-End Music Recital, a letter from Kingston's mother, Catherine Ko Cheng, was read aloud by his aunt, Kimberly Ko. It encapsulated the family's sentiments: "He lived a beautiful and meaningful life; we see Kingston as a gift. We hope that music will continue to inspire and entertain generations of the Springdale Community."
Performances That Touched Hearts
The evening featured moving performances that highlighted the family's unity and shared artistic devotion. His cousin, Kenna Rae Tee, played a rendition of Coldplay's "Everglow" on the donated piano, a song Kingston had eagerly awaited to hear. Her brother, Kyler Josh Tee, accompanied on violin, creating a "full circle" experience that deeply moved attendees.
Following this, his uncle, Kelie Ko, delivered powerful vocal performances of "Cinema Paradiso" and "To Where You Are," with Kyler Josh Tee providing instrumental support. The night served as a bridge between mourning and celebration, honoring Kingston's life through melody.
Blending Business and Artistry
Kingston Ralph Ko Cheng was a rising entrepreneur and musician who made significant marks in Cebu's business and arts scenes. As founder of The Mill Lifestyle Café, he crafted a space reflecting his minimalist, warm, and disciplined aesthetic.
In the String Edition Orchestra, his peers revered his technical prowess. Starting violin lessons at age 13, he was considered "Violin 1 material"—a prepared leader who valued time and treated fellow musicians like family.
A Gentle Spirit Remembered
Beyond his professional successes, Kingston was recalled as a gentle, respectful, and family-focused individual. Mentors noted his vibrant yet humble demeanor. To loved ones, he was not only talented but profoundly human, prioritizing relationships above all.
Tragically, Kingston's life ended on February 8, 2026, when he was hit by a speeding vehicle while walking in Banilad, Cebu City.
An Enduring Legacy
Though his time was short, Kingston's influence persists—not just in The Mill's coffee or orchestra memories, but in every student who will play his piano to discover their own musical voice. He lived with remarkable purpose, reminding us that a passionate life, however brief, never truly fades into silence.
