UCMed Diabetes Center Named 'Clinic of Competence' in Cebu
UCMed Diabetes Center Wins Prestigious Award

The University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMed) has achieved a significant milestone in healthcare excellence, with its Diabetes and Nutrition Center (DNC) receiving the prestigious 'Clinic of Competence' award from the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation, Inc. (PCDEF).

A Recognition of Excellence in Diabetes Care

This esteemed certification confirms that UCMed's DNC has successfully met the foundation's rigorous national standards for effective diabetes care and education. The award, presented on November 11, 2025, at the National Assembly of Diabetes Educators in Makati Diamond Residences, validates that the center's procedures, protocols, and patient services are scientifically sound, ethical, and aligned with the highest benchmarks in the Philippines.

Dr. April Melody Abcede, MD, the DNC unit head, formally accepted the award from Dr. Augusto D. Litonjua, MD, the president of PCDEF Diabetes Center Philippines. The ceremony, held at the Manila Hotel, was also attended by Joshua David Bendoy, the lead diabetes dietitian educator.

A Journey of Dedication and Teamwork

The path to this accreditation included a thorough audit by PCDEF officials, which took place on August 13, 2025. This recognition is a testament to the hard work of the DNC's multi-disciplinary team, which has been serving the community since its establishment in 2016 by Dr. Cherrie Gail Gonzalez.

With this award, UCMed solidifies its position as one of only two hospitals in Cebu to hold this distinction, marking it as a trusted hub for diabetes management and patient education in the Visayas region.

Strengthening a Commitment to Patient Health

UCMed's medical director, Dr. Armando V. Tan, MD, emphasized that this achievement is more than just an honor. He stated that it reflects the hospital's unwavering pursuit of excellence under its vision, 'Your Health, Our Priority.' He described the award as a promise to every patient that they will receive evidence-based and compassionate care.

Joshua David Bendoy added that the recognition strengthens the center's commitment to providing quality health maintenance through the prevention and management of diabetes and its complications. The collaborative team of diabetes educators, including doctors, nurses, and dietitians, provides comprehensive programs focused on diabetes self-management education and counseling.

After nearly a decade of service, the UCMed Diabetes and Nutrition Center is now more focused than ever on its mission to deliver enhanced, yet affordable, healthcare services to the community.
