Miss Universe Philippines Ahtisa Manalo Opens Up About PCOS Diagnosis at 21
Ahtisa Manalo Reveals PCOS Diagnosis at Age 21

In a candid and heartfelt revelation, Miss Universe Philippines candidate Ahtisa Manalo has disclosed that she was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) at the young age of 21. PCOS is a common hormonal disorder that can disrupt menstrual cycles and lead to various health challenges. Manalo emphasized that this condition is often shrouded in silence, making it difficult for many women to seek help or share their experiences.

Breaking the Silence on Menstrual Health

Manalo explained in an interview with ABS-CBN that discussing periods and related health issues has long been considered taboo in many circles. She recounted her own journey, noting that she endured painful periods for years, mistakenly believing such discomfort was normal. "It's not a topic that people usually talk about, and honestly, I think for a while it was taboo to even speak about your period or your menstruation, especially with the things that come with it. For me, I always had painful periods and I thought it was normal," she stated.

Challenges and Struggles with PCOS

The 28-year-old beauty queen highlighted the multifaceted impact of PCOS on her life. Beyond the physical pain, she pointed to weight fluctuations as a significant struggle. "Apart from the pain, it's for me the weight fluctuation. That's one thing that I struggle with because for my job, I have to maintain a certain kind of physique... you just cannot do anything about it," Manalo elaborated. She added that during her initial diagnosis, there were limited medications and supplements available, leaving her uncertain about how to manage the condition effectively.

Advocacy and Empowerment

Turning her personal challenge into a platform for change, Manalo has made women's health advocacy a central part of her Miss Universe Philippines campaign. She is encouraging women to speak openly about their health, aiming to destigmatize conversations around conditions like PCOS. Her efforts are part of a broader movement to promote awareness and support for those affected by hormonal disorders.
