CAAP Sees Agricultural Waste as Key to Sustainable Aviation Fuel in the Philippines
Agricultural Waste Key to Sustainable Aviation Fuel in PH

CAAP Identifies Agricultural Waste as Crucial for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Development

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is now focusing on a groundbreaking approach to reduce pollution in the aviation industry without compromising safety and aircraft operations. According to the agency, the Philippines holds immense potential in its agricultural sector, particularly through waste materials derived from rice and coconut production, which can serve as key ingredients for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Harnessing Agricultural Resources for Cleaner Skies

CAAP emphasizes that the country is in an excellent position for this transition due to its abundant agricultural industry. Waste materials from agricultural products can be converted into alternative jet fuel, offering an environmentally friendly solution. This initiative targets a significant reduction in carbon emissions from airplanes, aiming for a decrease of 65% to 80%. Beyond its eco-friendly benefits, CAAP assures that SAF can be safely blended with conventional jet fuels currently in use, ensuring compatibility and reliability in aviation operations.

Workshop Drives Policy Development and Stakeholder Collaboration

To assess the nation's readiness for this shift, CAAP organized the 2026 Sustainable Aviation Fuel Policy Development Workshop on March 24, 2026. This event brought together various industry stakeholders to discuss essential steps needed to support the advancement of SAF in the Philippines. Key focus areas included ensuring sufficient feedstock availability, adopting modern production technologies, capacity-building efforts, robust regulatory support, airline participation, and identifying investment opportunities.

The discussions highlighted several critical components:

  • Adequate feedstock supply from agricultural waste
  • Innovative technologies for efficient SAF production
  • Capacity-building programs to enhance skills and knowledge
  • Strong regulatory frameworks to guide implementation
  • Active involvement of airlines in the transition
  • Attractive investment opportunities to fuel growth

This strategic move by CAAP underscores a commitment to leveraging local resources for sustainable development in the aviation sector, potentially positioning the Philippines as a leader in green aviation solutions in the region.
