Asturias Municipality Implements Temporary 'No Chick-In' Order on Poultry Farm
The Municipality of Asturias has taken decisive action by issuing a temporary 'no chick-in' order against a local poultry farm located in Barangay Banban. This measure comes after the farm repeatedly failed to meet essential sanitary standards, posing potential health risks to the community.
Persistent Sanitary Violations Lead to Enforcement
According to the Asturias Public Information Office (PIO), municipal officials conducted multiple inspections of the poultry farm, uncovering ongoing issues despite several warnings. The problems were first identified in April 2025 during a surprise inspection, where officials observed significant fly infestations and other sanitation concerns.
Subsequent monitoring activities revealed that the farm had not implemented required improvements, such as installing proper mesh or netting to control flies and enhancing overall sanitation practices. In September 2025, a public hearing was held to allow the farm owner to explain the situation and continue operations under the condition that all recommendations would be followed. However, the farm still did not achieve full compliance, leading to the current enforcement action.
Details of the 'No Chick-In' Order
The temporary order, effective for one grow cycle, prohibits the farm from bringing in new batches of chickens across all its buildings. This pause in operations is designed to provide farm management with the necessary time to:
- Conduct thorough cleaning and disinfection of the facilities.
- Install appropriate netting to manage fly infestations.
- Implement proper management practices to ensure future compliance.
The PIO emphasized that this measure aims to prevent further disturbance and potential health risks to nearby residents, highlighting the local government's commitment to public safety.
Ongoing Monitoring and Future Compliance
The Asturias local government unit (LGU) has stated that inspections and verification activities will continue during this period. The farm will only be permitted to resume operations once all required conditions have been fully met, ensuring that sanitary standards are upheld to protect both animal welfare and community health.
This enforcement underscores the importance of adherence to agricultural regulations in maintaining environmental and public health standards in the region.
