Tropical Depression Basyang Causes Agricultural Damage in Cebu's Vegetable Basket

On February 6, 2026, Tropical Depression Basyang struck Dalaguete, Cebu, a region famously known as the Vegetable Basket of the province. The intense rainfall led to widespread flooding, resulting in significant damage to numerous farms in the area. This event has raised concerns about agricultural productivity and food supply in the region.

Storm Weakens to Low Pressure Area but Rain Persists

By Saturday morning, February 7, Basyang had weakened into a Low Pressure Area (LPA) as it moved over the Sulu Sea. Despite this downgrade, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) continues to issue warnings. The weather system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to several parts of the country, with precipitation levels ranging from 50 to 100 millimeters in areas such as Palawan, Mindoro, Negros Occidental, Antique, Iloilo, and Guimaras.

Weather Conditions and Safety Advisories

In addition to the rain, the Northeast Monsoon (amihan) is contributing to strong winds affecting large portions of Luzon, Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, and Zamboanga del Norte. Pagasa has also cautioned fishermen about dangerous sea conditions, including large waves, making fishing activities hazardous in affected coastal areas.

Cebu City's Response and Preparedness

In a report from Mayor Nestor Archival on Saturday morning, Cebu City was declared safe with no major damages recorded following the storm's impact. The mayor attributed this positive outcome to the early alert systems and the swift actions of emergency teams and disaster responders in the city. To support neighboring municipalities, Cebu City dispatched a 14-member disaster response team to Argao in southern Cebu, led by Councilor Dave Tumulak, to provide urgent assistance to areas in need.

Ongoing Vigilance and Community Safety

Even though Basyang is no longer a tropical depression, Cebu City remains on heightened alert to ensure the safety of its residents. Authorities are urging everyone to stay vigilant for potential further rainfall and flooding in their localities. This proactive approach aims to mitigate any additional risks and protect communities from future weather-related incidents.
