Cebu City Achieves Significant Waste Reduction Through Segregation and Shredding Programs
Cebu City has made a remarkable stride in managing its solid waste, cutting down the daily collection by at least 50 tons through the implementation of waste segregation and shredding initiatives. This reduction is a direct result of stricter waste separation at the barangay level and the operational efficiency of shredding machines, especially those deployed at the bustling Carbon Market.
Mayor Archival Highlights Cost Savings and Environmental Benefits
Mayor Nestor Archival emphasized that this achievement has significantly alleviated the city's waste disposal system challenges. From a previous daily collection of 600 tons, the amount has now decreased to 550 tons. The mayor pointed out that the cost of hauling and disposing of waste reaches approximately P3,000 per ton, meaning the 50-ton reduction translates to daily savings of around P150,000.
"This is why we are committed to continuing these efforts," Mayor Archival stated, underscoring the financial and operational advantages for the city.
Grassroots Efforts and Targeted Operations Drive Success
The waste reduction strategy begins at the household level, with each residence playing a crucial role. Currently, this approach serves as the primary method while Cebu City explores temporary and long-term solutions for waste disposal, especially following the closure of the Binaliw landfill.
Approximately 30 upland barangays have contributed to this reduction. If each barangay can collect just one ton of waste through segregation, it would amount to 30 tons that no longer need to be transported to landfills, further easing the burden on the city's resources.
Carbon Market Shredding Operations Showcase Effective Waste Management
At Carbon Market alone, shredding operations have already reduced waste by about 15 tons per day. The city aims to increase this figure to 20 tons daily, particularly since Carbon Market generates close to 40 tons of waste each day. The shredded waste, primarily biodegradable materials, does not end up in disposal sites, leading to decreased hauling volumes and associated costs.
Future Plans for Expansion and Sustainability
Mayor Archival announced plans to expand waste segregation and shredding initiatives to other areas across the city. He stressed that every ton of waste reduced helps conserve limited funds as Cebu City works to improve its waste management system. This proactive approach not only addresses immediate disposal challenges but also promotes a more sustainable and cost-effective urban environment.
