The Department of Health (DOH) has alerted the public to take precautions against chronic kidney disease (CKD), following data showing an estimated 36% of Filipinos, or one in every three individuals, are already affected.
Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease
According to the DOH, CKD is a condition where kidney function gradually declines, resulting in difficulty removing waste and excess water from the body. The agency noted that while CKD can affect anyone, the risk is higher for those with diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, a family history of kidney disease, smokers, and alcohol drinkers.
Alarming Financial Impact
Based on reports, PhilHealth has spent approximately PHP 27 billion for over two million dialysis claims in the first six months of 2025 alone. The DOH has called CKD a "silent killer" because it often shows no symptoms in its early stages. As the disease worsens, symptoms may include swelling of the face, hands, and feet, frequent urination especially at night, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing.
Preventive Measures
To prevent CKD, the DOH encourages the public to reduce consumption of ultra-processed foods high in salt, sugar, and preservatives. It also advises regular water intake, exercise, and avoiding vices to maintain kidney health.
