The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is prioritizing the expansion of active transport facilities in the country, including the construction of more bicycle lanes, to reduce road crash incidents. During a road safety summit held in Pasig City, DOTr Director IV Joshua Rodriguez stated that one of the agency's key programs is the active transport project focused on adding Class 1 bike lanes for the public.
Types of Bike Lanes
Rodriguez explained that there are different types of bike lanes: Class 3 (shared lane), Class 2 (separated lane), and Class 1, which has a barrier between cyclists and motorized vehicles. The official emphasized that users of non-motorized transport and pedestrians are among the most vulnerable to road crashes, making it essential to protect them through safer infrastructure.
Preventing Accidents
“The only way we can avoid road crashes involving them is to prevent other road users or other motorized vehicle users from entering their lane,” he added. According to the DOTr, approximately 1,100 kilometers of bike lanes have been built nationwide as of the first quarter of 2026. The agency aims to expand this to 2,400 kilometers by 2028 as part of a broader road safety and sustainable transport plan.
