Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian has pledged assistance to thousands of families displaced by a massive fire that broke out at the Parola compound in Binondo, Manila over the weekend. The secretary has directed the DSWD Field Office National Capital Region to ensure the immediate delivery of necessary aid to affected families, including food and other basic necessities as they recover from the tragedy.
Immediate Response Ordered
Gatchalian ordered Regional Director Michael Lorico to send kitchen kits, sleeping kits, and other non-food items to internally displaced families who are temporarily staying at the Delpan evacuation center. The directive aims to address the urgent needs of those who lost their homes in the blaze.
Additional Support Ready
DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao stated that the agency is prepared to provide additional food and non-food items in coordination with the Manila local government unit, depending on the needs of the families affected by the fire. The collaboration ensures that resources are efficiently distributed to those who require them most.
The massive fire erupted at the Parola compound on the afternoon of Saturday, May 23, resulting in the displacement of 2,500 families. Over 2,100 of these families are currently staying at the Delpan evacuation center, where they are receiving temporary shelter and assistance.
The DSWD continues to monitor the situation and stands ready to extend further support as the community begins the process of rebuilding their lives.
