Senator Imee Marcos has issued a stark warning about a potential new agricultural crisis brewing in the Philippines, driven by the relentless increase in prices and a looming shortage in the supply of fertilizer. According to Senator Marcos, if the escalating costs of fertilizer continue unabated, there is a real possibility that palay production could plummet, leading to a further surge in the market price of rice. "Prices are already rising, and there is a potential for supply to run short. If this happens, production will drop and the price of rice will increase even more," Marcos emphasized. She highlighted that based on sector data, the price of palay might reach between ₱17 to ₱20 per kilogram, which could push the price of rice to ₱55 to ₱60 per kilogram or even higher, exacerbating the economic burden on consumers.
Allegations of Opportunism and Government Obstruction
Marcos also raised concerns about certain groups potentially exploiting the crisis for profit, stating that some opportunists have turned the situation into a business venture. Furthermore, she pointed to internal government resistance as a significant barrier to implementing solutions. The senator alleged that efforts to promote biofertilizer as a cost-effective alternative have been hindered from within the government, including by some individuals in the Department of Agriculture and Congress, due to the interests of large fertilizer importers. She noted that some distributors in Kadiwa have successfully sold rice at ₱25 per kilogram without subsidies, simply by utilizing biofertilizer correctly. However, she questioned the country's continued reliance on imported fertilizers despite the availability of local alternatives, urging a shift towards sustainable and domestically sourced options to mitigate the crisis.
