Mandaue City Takes a Stand Against Price Gouging Amid Global Economic Turmoil
In an era where global unrest frequently dictates local living costs, ordinary consumers are left bewildered, questioning whether soaring prices for essential goods stem from natural market forces or the exploitative practices of large businesses. With ongoing tensions in the Middle East, it is no surprise that the world economy has been shaken. When conflict erupts in that region, crude oil prices inevitably spike, triggering a domino effect that impacts all commodities.
While this pattern is expected, what exacerbates the situation is the victimization of everyday consumers by profiteers. In response, Mandaue City has implemented a decisive measure to curb and prevent such exploitation. The recent passage of Resolution 380-2026 by the Mandaue City Council is not merely a regulation; it is a significant declaration of protection for ordinary consumers.
Empowering Authorities to Ensure Fair Pricing
This resolution, introduced by Councilor Jun Arcilla Jr. and Barangay President Dante Borbajo, grants authority to the Mandaue City Police and the Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO) to inspect the sale of gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Fairness dictates that businesses have a right to reasonable profits based on their product investments, and this is unquestionable.
However, injustice occurs when entrepreneurs weaponize global crises to further squeeze already struggling consumers. For instance, if gas stations or LPG distributors engage in "price manipulation," they might sell older, cheaper stocks at inflated prices, falsely attributing the hike to Middle East tensions. Resolution 380-2026 aims to suppress such practices.
Targeting Hoarding and Ensuring Transparency
The resolution also targets hoarding, where suppliers hide old stocks only to sell them at premium prices during shortages. Mayor Thadeo Jovito Ouano has ordered inspections not only at gas stations but also at large warehouses where oil is stored. This is a commendable step because it allows for verification of whether crude oil product prices are justifiable.
The involvement of the Department of Energy (DOE) and the empowerment of the BPLO to impose penalties serve as the "teeth" of this resolution, whose goal is transparency—the mortal enemy of profiteers. Mandaue City's proactive stance sends a clear message to businesses: while the city supports commerce, it will not tolerate exploitative behavior, which often arises during global economic tensions.
A Call for Broader Consumer Protection
It would be ideal if not only Mandaue City but all towns and cities across the nation took similar actions to protect ordinary consumers. In these challenging times, such measures are undoubtedly necessary to safeguard the public from unfair practices and ensure economic stability.
