The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid under a Yellow Alert from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, June 13.
According to the NGCP, the available capacity of the grid was 2,669 megawatts, while the expected peak demand was 2,393 megawatts. The agency also reported that three power plants experienced forced outages this month.
In addition, eight plants have been non-operational since May, while nine others are running at reduced capacity, resulting in a total loss of 842 megawatts of power supply to the grid.
The NGCP added that the malfunction of three coal plants, combined with high electricity demand, prompted the declaration of the Yellow Alert. A Yellow Alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the contingency requirement of the transmission grid.
