The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas has warned residents of Cebu to brace for occasional heavy rains until Wednesday, July 1, 2026, due to a Low Pressure Area (LPA) that entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
LPA Could Become Tropical Depression
In an interview with SunStar Cebu on Monday, June 29, Pagasa Visayas Weather Specialist Jhomer Eclarino said the province is expected to experience occasional rains, with the heaviest expected on Tuesday, June 30. “Cebu will experience occasional heavy rains. We are already experiencing rains that could be critical in flash flood and landslide-prone areas,” Eclarino said.
He explained that the rains are being enhanced by the LPA, which was last spotted about 390 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, and has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression by Monday afternoon.
Advisories for Flood and Landslide-Prone Areas
Eclarino advised residents, especially those living in flood and landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant as the heavy rains could cause sudden flooding and landslides.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 7 also issued an advisory on Monday, June 29, urging motorists and travelers to avoid roads that are commonly flooded. The agency said its personnel are on 24-hour standby to respond to affected areas in Metro Cebu, with equipment for drainage cleaning, declogging operations, and other emergency responses. DPWH 7 also urged the public to report flooding, landslides, and road blockages through their official Facebook page for immediate action.
PDRRMO Ready for Possible Disasters
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) confirmed that it is prepared to face possible disasters, especially due to the threatening LPA in the Visayas. In an interview during his visit to the Cebu Provincial Capitol, PDRRMO head Dennis Pastor said they are ready to assist by providing equipment to towns with landslide-prone areas.
High Chance of Tropical Cyclone Henry
In a separate phone interview with SunStar Cebu, Eclarino said the LPA was last spotted 390 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, at 11:00 a.m. on June 29, 2026, and has a “high” chance of becoming Tropical Cyclone Henry within the next 24 hours. He also warned that the heavy rains are expected to cause flash floods in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous areas.
Impact-Based Warning Issued
As of 3:00 p.m., the Pagasa Visayas Regional Services Division (PRSD) issued Impact-Based Warning No. 2, warning of minor impacts expected in Metro Cebu, including small disruptions to public utilities, some power interruptions, and transportation delays. The towns of Aloguinsan, Barili, Pinamungajan, and Minglanilla, and the cities of Naga, Talisay, Toledo, and Cebu, are expected to experience moderate to heavy rain showers with lightning and strong winds in the afternoon, according to Thunderstorm Advisory No. 20 of Pagasa Visayas PRSD.
Classes Suspended in Two LGUs
According to a Facebook post by the Cebu Province Public Information Office, two local government units (LGUs) had already suspended classes on June 29. The towns of Santa Fe and Medellin suspended classes at all levels.
