With growing concerns about the environment and conserving Mother Earth, numerous organizations, communities, and schools have implemented meaningful strategies to rid areas of garbage and develop sustainable greenery and vegetable patches. In Tayud, Consolacion, a notable event was organized by the Zonta Club of Cebu 2, along with the Z Clubs of Childlink High School and Our Lady of Joy Learning Center, in partnership with the local government unit (LGU) of Consolacion.
Early Morning Gathering at Consolacion Eco Park
The activity took place at the Consolacion Eco Park, where volunteers gathered as early as 6 a.m. to get things done. The agenda began with morning prayers and warm greetings from the different groups, followed by personal messages from representatives of the Z Club of Childlink HS, Z Club of Our Lady of Joy LC, Zonta Club of Cebu 2, and LGU Consolacion.
Expert Insights and Coastal Cleanup
Special guest Cherry Piquero-Ballescas, PhD, from the Regional Center on Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development, shared valuable insights on the environment and its proper maintenance. She also provided instructions for the coastal cleanup, offering a how-to-do-it-better approach to ensure effectiveness.
After the cleanup, tips for vegetable planting were delivered by an LGU representative. This portion of the program captured the group's attention due to its numerous ways of successful implementation. Planting time finally arrived for mothers and mentors, a unique occasion where the young and the not-so-young shared planting styles, creating a memorable experience.
Rewards and Reminders
Next on the agenda were the rewards. Weigh-in and assessments of the heavy haul of garbage and trash were conducted. A simple tap on the shoulder greeted everyone for a job well done. Another reward was the delicious “pamainit,” where volunteers were reminded to bring their own cups and utensils to avoid adding to the trash they had just gathered.
