Environment authorities have successfully seized a significant quantity of illegally cut lumber in the former stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Basilan province, with crucial support from the 32nd Infantry Battalion (32IB). This operation marks a notable step in combating environmental crimes in a historically volatile region.
Operation Details and Location
Lieutenant Colonel Gerwin Maghuyop, the commander of the 32IB, confirmed that personnel from the Maluso Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (Menro) conducted the seizure on Thursday, February 19. The confiscation took place in Mahatalang village, Sumisip, Basilan, an area within the Sampinit Complex.
This complex, situated at the tri-boundary of Lamitan City, Sumisip, and Maluso, once served as a key refuge and stronghold for rebels and Abu Sayyaf bandits during past military campaigns. Its remote and rugged terrain has historically made it a hotspot for illicit activities, including illegal logging.
Military Support and Security Measures
Maghuyop emphasized that the 32IB troops provided essential security for the Menro personnel during the verification and inspection of reported illegal logging activities in Mahatalang. This collaboration underscores the military's role in supporting environmental law enforcement in conflict-affected areas.
The confiscated lumber, identified as lauan wood—commonly known as Philippine Mahogany or Meranti, a tropical hardwood available in red and white varieties—has been secured at the battalion headquarters. Menro-Maluso is currently assessing the exact volume of the seized timber, pending thorough documentation and legal disposition in accordance with environmental regulations.
Ongoing Efforts and Provincial Initiatives
Commander Maghuyop reiterated the 32IB's commitment to continuing support for enforcement initiatives aimed at preventing illegal logging and preserving the ecological integrity of Basilan. This operation aligns with broader provincial efforts to protect forest resources.
Last year, Governor Mujiv Hataman issued an executive order specifically designed to safeguard the forests of Basilan, including the Sampinit Complex. This order highlights the local government's dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable management in a region recovering from years of insurgency.
The seizure not only disrupts illegal logging networks but also sends a strong message about the importance of environmental protection in post-conflict zones. Authorities remain vigilant in monitoring such activities to ensure compliance with laws and promote ecological balance in Basilan.
