Authorities successfully rescued 61 Korean nationals after the tourist boat they were on experienced engine failure and ran aground in the waters near Olango Island, Lapu-Lapu City, on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

The incident occurred when the motor banca named Black Pearl encountered strong winds and large waves. The vessel's engine reportedly failed, causing it to drift and eventually run aground in the shallow waters off San Vicente, Olango Island. The impact caused a hole in the rear section of the boat's hull.

Multi-Agency Response Saves the Day

Personnel from the Coast Guard Olango sub-station immediately coordinated a rescue operation. They were joined by another Coast Guard unit from Lapu-Lapu City and the Olango Maritime Police. Together, the teams worked to evacuate all 61 foreign passengers from the stricken vessel.

All passengers were transferred safely using a flotilla of five speedboats and one other motor banca. They were then brought to the shoreline of Barangay Maribago in Lapu-Lapu City. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the tourists or crew members.
