Bridge Collapse in Cebu City, 48 Families Evacuated

A vital access bridge in Cebu City collapsed on Saturday, December 6, 2025, after being pounded by relentless rains from Tropical Depression Wilma. The incident has cut off residents of the Deo Homes subdivision in Barangay Binaliw, prompting urgent calls for government assistance.

Evacuation Centers Shelter Dozens of Families

As the storm continued to affect parts of the city, at least 48 families remained in various evacuation centers for their safety. According to Portia Basmayor, head of the Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS), these families were preemptively evacuated due to threats of flooding, potential landslides, and unsafe conditions in their homes.

The Regino Elementary School in Barangay Pahina Central is hosting the largest number of evacuees, providing shelter to 39 families or 173 individuals. This group comprises 91 males and 82 females.

Other active evacuation sites include:

  • Tisa National High School – 3 families, 16 individuals (4 male, 12 female)
  • Busay Day Care Center – 2 families, 10 individuals (4 male, 6 female)
  • Baugo Gym in Barangay Budlaan – 4 families, 12 individuals (5 male, 7 female)

City Government Mobilizes Immediate Response

The Cebu City government has swiftly acted to support the affected residents. The City Hall is distributing food packs, sleeping kits, and other essential items to all displaced families. Teams from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) and the DSWS remain deployed on the ground for continuous assessment, monitoring, and to provide further assistance.

The bridge collapse near Deo Homes underscores the immediate impact of the severe weather, isolating the subdivision's residents and halting local transportation. Their appeal for help from the city government highlights the need for rapid infrastructure repair and disaster mitigation.

Weather Outlook Improves

Following days of heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Depression Wilma, weather conditions are expected to improve. Forecasts indicate clearer skies by Sunday, December 7, and warmer weather by Monday, December 8. This reprieve will aid in recovery and assessment operations across the affected barangays in Cebu City.
