The fire erupted in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Birch by Romeo Lane, a well-known nightspot located in the Baga area of Arpora village, North Goa district. The venue is approximately 16 kilometers northwest of Panaji, the state capital. According to police reports, the blaze required nearly two hours of intense effort by multiple fire tenders before it was fully extinguished.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed profound grief, stating, "Today is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A major fire incident at Arpora has taken the lives of 23 people. I am deeply grieved and offer my heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families in this hour of unimaginable loss."
Casualties and Ongoing Response
Preliminary information cited by local news channel NDTV indicates that around 50 people were injured in the fire. Many of the victims are currently receiving treatment at the Goa Medical College hospital. Police chief Alok Kumar revealed that a majority of the deceased were believed to be staff working at the establishment.
"Further, we are trying to identify the bodies, and there is a possibility that some visitors might also be among the dead, which we are trying to ascertain," Kumar explained. The recovered bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations as part of the official procedure.

Initial police investigations point to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder explosion near the nightclub's kitchen as the likely cause of the catastrophic fire. This incident highlights a recurring and grave issue in India, where fire safety standards are often neglected.
