Pumpboat Sinks Near Bohol, 18 Rescued by Coast Guard

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District Central Visayas has issued a renewed call for public adherence to maritime safety rules following a successful rescue operation. This appeal comes after 18 individuals were saved when a pumpboat capsized near Gilutungan Island during the peak holiday travel period.

Timely Rescue Averts Tragedy

The incident occurred on Sunday, December 28, 2025. The pumpboat, named Jhon David, reportedly lost stability and capsized in the waters near Gilutungan Island. It was then carried by currents towards the sea near Cuaming Island, Bohol. The vessel had originated from Getafe, Bohol and was en route to Cebu City when the accident happened.

Coordinated Search and Rescue Effort

Coast Guard teams in Cordova sprang into action immediately after receiving the distress report at the Passenger Assistance Center in the RoRo Port. By 1:20 PM on December 28, responders under Oplan Biyaheng Ayos Pasko 2025 had launched a swift search and rescue mission.

The collaborative effort led to the successful rescue of all 18 people on board. The breakdown of survivors includes:

  • Two fishermen
  • Fourteen passengers from the MV Ocean Jet
  • Two Coast Guard personnel

The crew of MV Ocean Jet 10 played a crucial role, successfully retrieving the 14 passengers and transporting them safely to Pier 1 in Cebu City. The pumpboat operator and his child were also rescued unharmed.

Investigation Underway and Safety Reminder

Authorities confirmed that no serious injuries were reported among the survivors. The PCG is providing necessary assistance to those affected while conducting an initial investigation into the cause of the capsizing. The sunken pumpboat has been towed and secured near the Cordova Reef.

In a statement released on Monday, December 29, 2025, the Coast Guard emphasized the critical importance of safety during busy travel seasons. "The PCG continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and observe maritime safety measures, especially during peak travel periods," the agency stated. This incident highlights the ongoing risks at sea and the vital importance of following safety protocols to prevent future maritime accidents.
