The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have taken decisive action, canceling all scheduled athletic events for November 9, 2025, due to the imminent threat posed by Typhoon Uwan across the Philippines.
Precautionary Measures by UAAP
The UAAP announced a full suspension of all games as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of players, staff, and fans. The canceled events include matches in the men's basketball, men's football, and high school volleyball tournaments.
This cancellation directly impacts one of the most anticipated rivalries in Philippine collegiate sports: the men's basketball showdown between the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles and the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers.
Another significant men's basketball game postponed was the match between the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers.
In men's football, the scheduled games between UST and FEU, as well as the match between La Salle and the University of the Philippines (UP), have also been called off.
NCAA Follows Suit with Widespread Cancellations
Following the UAAP's lead, the NCAA also canceled its slate of games. The postponed senior basketball matches include the Group A matchup between defending champion Mapua University (5-5) and Arellano University (3-6).
In Group B action, last year's finalist De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (6-4) will no longer face Emilio Aguinaldo College (4-5).
The NCAA's cancellations extended beyond the senior division. The organization also postponed all juniors' basketball matches and the scheduled chess tournament.
Safety First in the Face of Nature's Fury
The collective decision by the country's two premier collegiate athletic associations underscores a primary commitment to safety. By proactively canceling events, the UAAP and NCAA aim to prevent any potential risks associated with travel and large gatherings during the severe weather conditions brought by Typhoon Uwan.
New schedules for the postponed games are expected to be announced by the respective leagues once the weather situation improves and it is deemed safe to resume sporting activities.
