The endorsement by the Cebu Provincial Development Council (PDC) Executive Committee of an 80-megawatt wind power project in Alegria marks a new shift in Cebu's approach to industrial development.
Breaking the Pattern
Typically, towns host large energy infrastructure but remain in darkness, breathing smoke from plants while electricity and revenue are directly delivered to major cities.
The agreement between MC Power Solutions, Inc. and the Municipality of Alegria is expected to break this pattern and set a standard for how renewable energy can benefit host communities.
Climate and Economy
At its core, this project shows that climate action is not only an environmental necessity but also a highly profitable economic engine.
Once completed, the 80 megawatts of electricity generated will be added to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), ensuring a stable power source not only for Cebu but for the entire Visayas.
Local Benefits
The project will also provide concrete additional revenue for Alegria, especially for the barangays where it will be located: Guadalupe, Valencia, and Lepanto.
While an electric fan needs electricity to produce wind, this project only needs wind to produce electricity, which will surely generate substantial income for Alegria.
The municipality will gain sustainable revenue through real property and local business taxes, significantly expanding the financial capacity of the local government.
Community Support
Beyond revenue, the Alegria community will also be supported by KAHALIGI, the corporate social responsibility program of MC Power, making them shareholders.
In the Philippines, several areas have already benefited from wind power, particularly Ilocos Sur, considered the country's wind energy center.
Wind power has long been utilized by progressive countries such as Germany, Scotland, and Denmark.
It is not surprising that after Alegria, other towns in Cebu may host wind power projects in the near future.
