Philippines on Track for 35% Renewable Energy Goal by 2030
PH Renewable Energy Target 35% by 2030 Achievable

Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Sharon Garin expressed strong confidence on Friday that the Philippines will achieve its goal of increasing renewable energy's share in the power mix to 35 percent by 2030, citing substantial investor interest across multiple green energy sectors.

Investor Interest Driving Renewable Expansion

During an interview in Makati City, Secretary Garin revealed that significant interest is pouring in for various renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, waste-to-energy, and geothermal developments. She emphasized that the DOE's green energy auction program has been instrumental in advancing the government's renewable energy agenda.

The latest data shows promising progress toward this goal. As of June 2025, renewable energy already accounts for 32.3 percent of the country's total installed capacity, putting the Philippines within reach of its immediate target.

Major Projects Leading the Charge

Garin highlighted several landmark projects that demonstrate the country's commitment to renewable energy transformation. Among these is the massive 3,500MW-peak integrated solar and battery energy storage facility being developed by MTerra Solar Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of Meralco PowerGen Corp., located in Nueva Ecija.

This groundbreaking project represents the type of infrastructure development that will significantly boost domestic renewable capacity and accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.

Government Initiatives Supporting Renewable Growth

The energy chief also pointed to strategic government directives that complement private sector investments. One key initiative requires government offices and local government units to install rooftop solar systems on their buildings, creating additional renewable energy capacity while setting an example for commercial and residential adoption.

"We're on track and we are pushing for more programs. So I'm quite confident that it's a doable task," Garin stated, reinforcing her optimistic outlook about meeting the 2030 target and the more ambitious goal of 50 percent renewable energy by 2040.

The combination of private sector investment, government policy support, and technological advancement positions the Philippines for a sustainable energy future that promises both environmental benefits and energy security for generations to come.
