Army Unit Strengthens Environmental Commitment Through Tree Planting
The 32nd Infantry Battalion (32IB) of the Philippine Army demonstrated its dedication to environmental conservation by conducting a significant tree growing activity in Basilan province. The event took place on Friday, November 28, at Abong-Abong Elementary School in Maluso town, marking a substantial step toward sustainable community development in the region.
Collaborative Effort for Greener Basilan
Leading the initiative was Lieutenant Colonel Gerwin Maghuyop, commander of the 32IB, who was joined by key officers including First Lieutenant Jose Miguel Abellanosa, Charlie Company commander, and First Lieutenant Jemuel Beduya, Civil-Military Operations officer. The activity saw the planting and nurturing of 100 fruit-bearing trees and 50 Nara tree seedlings, representing a diverse approach to reforestation and environmental sustainability.
What distinguishes this initiative as a tree growing activity rather than simple planting is the comprehensive approach that ensures continuous care, monitoring, and long-term survival of the trees. This methodology guarantees that the environmental benefits extend well beyond the initial planting phase.
Community Partnership for Sustainable Development
The tree growing activity was conducted in close coordination with local stakeholders, including school officials and village leaders. Among the community partners were Roseller Laping, Teacher-in-Charge; Sweetheart Partol, Teacher I; Haifa Paredes, village councilor; and Lyrha Aranez, also a village councilor.
Lieutenant Colonel Maghuyop emphasized the broader mission of the military unit, stating: "Our duty extends beyond security. It includes nurturing the environment and building strong relationships with our communities." He further highlighted the symbolic importance of the initiative, adding: "These trees symbolize our enduring partnership and hope for a greener future."
Long-Term Environmental and Economic Benefits
The carefully selected mix of tree species promises multiple benefits for the Maluso community. The fruit-bearing trees are expected to provide future livelihood opportunities, while the Nara trees contribute to broader reforestation efforts and environmental protection.
First Lieutenant Abellanosa echoed the commitment to sustainability, noting: "Tree Growing is more than planting—it is about sustaining life. Together with the community, we are helping build a healthier and greener environment for future generations."
The 32IB remains steadfast in its mission to promote environmental stewardship and strengthen community partnerships while supporting sustainable peace and development across Basilan province. This activity represents just one component of their comprehensive approach to serving both the people and the environment of the region.
