Davao City's Top High School Leaders Dive into Sustainable Development at Energy Plant Workshop

On February 28, 2026, forty of Davao City's most promising high school leaders convened at Therma South, Inc. (TSI), a subsidiary of AboitizPower, for an immersive workshop focused on sustainable development. These students, nominated for the Most Outstanding High School Graduate (MOHSG) program by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Davao, explored how long-term, collaborative efforts and corporate initiatives like those at TSI align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) to drive community progress.

Connecting Global Goals with Local Action in Mindanao

Through interactive discussions, the participants delved into how global sustainability objectives can be applied locally to address pressing challenges in Mindanao, particularly in Davao. Topics ranged from enhancing climate resilience and expanding energy access to promoting social equity and boosting economic growth. Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao contributed to the workshop by providing a detailed explanation of the 17 UNSDGs, helping students bridge the gap between international frameworks and regional opportunities for meaningful impact.

Ulysses, a MOHSG nominee from Los Amigos National High School, shared his perspective: "The UNSDG framework challenges me to think beyond short-term projects. It makes me ask: Will this initiative still matter in years to come? Will it help the next generation of students?"

Insights into Energy Systems and Community Development

TSI offered students a firsthand look at Mindanao's energy infrastructure, showcasing how responsible management and community-oriented operations contribute to sustainable development. Engr. Mar Benedec Picar, TSI Pollution Control Officer, emphasized: "We want young leaders to understand the broader role of a balanced energy system in advancing community development and long-term progress."

The training emphasized reflection, collaboration, and a practical understanding of local issues. Arman Miguel Montero, MOHSG 59 Project Chair and 2026 JCI Davao President-Elect, highlighted the foundational role of awareness in leadership: "When students understand the real issues shaping Mindanao, they can lead with confidence and purpose. Leadership starts with knowledge and grows through action."

Multi-Sector Collaboration Empowers Future Leaders

The MOHSG UNSDG Training exemplifies the power of partnerships across sectors. By combining the efforts of JCI Davao, TSI, and Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, student leaders gained valuable tools and insights to translate their knowledge into actionable contributions for their communities.

Ulysses added: "By connecting youth leadership with real-world insights, the training empowers students to become active contributors to Mindanao's sustainable development. The lessons they take forward today could shape solutions that benefit communities for years to come."

This program is part of JCI Davao's longstanding MOHSG initiative, which aims to equip student leaders with essential life skills, leadership values, and exposure to diverse sectors in Mindanao. The goal is to prepare the next generation to effectively tackle social, economic, and environmental challenges, ensuring a brighter future for the region.
