Iloilo City Wins Two Major International Awards for Cleanliness and Nature
Iloilo City Bags Asean Clean Tourist City, UNEP Honors

The City of Iloilo has spectacularly opened the year 2026 by securing two major international accolades that highlight its leadership in urban sustainability and environmental care.

A Double Victory for Iloilo's Urban Excellence

In a significant boost to its global profile, Iloilo City has been honored with the Asean Clean Tourist City Award for the second time. This award reaffirms the city's persistent efforts in promoting sustainable, community-focused tourism. Separately, the city has also been named a Role Model City by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center. This recognition celebrates Iloilo's pioneering work in advancing ecosystem restoration and implementing nature-based solutions within its urban landscape.

The Journey to Recognition: Inspections and Ceremonies

The path to the Asean Clean Tourist City Award involved a rigorous validation process. Officials from the Department of Tourism Central Office-Office of Tourism Standards conducted an on-site inspection on July 25, 2025. The city will officially receive this honor during a ceremony in Cebu City on January 30, 2026. Iloilo first won this award in 2019, which covered the 2020-2022 cycle, making this a repeat and hard-earned victory.

Mayor Raisa Treñas expressed profound pride in this collective achievement. She emphasized that the honor belongs to every Ilonggo and called for continued cooperation in maintaining the city's cleanliness, order, and beauty.

A Global Model for Green and Resilient Communities

The UNEP Role Model City designation places Iloilo on the world map for environmental stewardship. This award contributes directly to the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, showcasing Iloilo's successful track record in using nature-based solutions to create greener and more resilient communities. The city's initiatives serve as a blueprint for other urban centers aiming to balance development with ecological health.

Together, these twin recognitions powerfully underscore Iloilo City's evolving reputation as a premier model for clean, sustainable, and resilient urban development. As it continues to inspire both its residents and the international community, Iloilo solidifies its role as a frontrunner in tourism excellence and proactive environmental governance.
