The Davao City Government, in a collaborative effort with the Davao City Water District (DCWD), has delivered immediate water relief to residents of Barangay Langub. The initiative involved the installation of eight 2,000-liter water tanks, providing a crucial source of free, potable water for the community.
An Interim Solution for an Upland Community
This project serves as a vital stopgap measure, designed to supply clean water to at least 1,150 households in the area. The need for such an intervention stems from the barangay's geographical challenge. Due to its upland location, water pressure from the main system struggles to reach homes, making a direct DCWD pipeline connection currently unfeasible. The newly installed tanks ensure residents have reliable access while a permanent solution is being built.
Community Relief and Gratitude
The impact on the ground has been immediate and profound. Barangay Councilor Venencio Bajenting expressed the community's elation, highlighting how the project has transformed daily life. "People are elated because there is no need to buy water from the store since it is free from the city government," Bajenting said. He noted that children, who once had to walk long distances to fetch water, can now access it easily and safely near their homes.
Former Barangay Captain Esmeraldo Pamat also extended his gratitude to Mayor Baste Duterte's office for prioritizing the welfare of Langub's residents. He emphasized that the installed tanks directly address their current water difficulties, providing access to safe and clean water.
The Path to a Permanent Water System
While the tanks provide relief, DCWD is actively working on a long-term fix. Spokesperson Jovana Cresta Duhaylungsod explained the complexities of supplying water to the high-elevation area. The old pipelines were prone to leaks, prompting the utility to implement a new, more robust system.
DCWD is currently installing new, larger pipelines, including a 250mm main line supported by two 100mm lines. This upgraded infrastructure is part of the broader Shrine-Langub improvement plan, which also includes additional storage facilities. Due to the elevation, water is being routed through three reservoirs to finally reach the Langub area, ensuring a sustainable and consistent future supply.
This project underscores the Davao City Government's commitment to addressing the essential needs of its communities. It represents a significant step toward ensuring all Dabawenyos have access to a reliable and clean water supply, bridging the gap until a full, permanent system is completed.
