The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has taken a significant step to boost agriculture in Sulu by concluding a field activity aimed at finding new water sources for future irrigation projects.
Field Assessment in Panamao and Maimbung
Last week, a technical team from the NIA Zambasulta Regional Sub-Office carried out a two-day water source identification mission. The activity focused on the municipalities of Panamao and Maimbung in the province of Sulu. According to a statement released on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, the goal was to locate viable water sources capable of supporting new irrigation systems.
Collaborative Effort for Accurate Validation
The field assessment was led by Engineer Jhassa Anne Cambalon, who heads the Planning and Design Unit. She was joined by Feasibility Study Focal Person Albert Bernardo and Institutional Development Officer Fernaida Dahim. To ensure the process was thorough and accurate, the NIA team worked closely with several key local stakeholders.
These included the Sulu Provincial Engineer's Office, relevant local government units, community leaders, and the 21st Infantry Battalion. This coordination was vital for smooth field validation and the precise identification of potential sites.
Promising Findings and Next Steps
The agency reported that the team successfully identified and documented several promising water source locations. These initial findings are now slated for further technical evaluation and detailed feasibility studies.
This marks a crucial initial phase in the plan to expand irrigation services in Sulu. The long-term objectives are clear: to improve farm productivity, provide substantial support to local farmers, and advance overall agricultural development and food security in the area.
