PBBM Urges Marines: Brace for Severe Tropical Storm Uwan
Marcos to Marines: Prepare for Tropical Storm Uwan

President Marcos Mobilizes Marines Ahead of Severe Tropical Storm

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has issued a crucial directive to the Philippine Marine Corps, urging them to prepare for the approaching Severe Tropical Storm Uwan and ensure the protection of Filipino citizens and the security of the nation's coastlines.

The President made this urgent call during the 75th anniversary celebration of the Philippine Marine Corps held at V. Almario Avenue in Parañaque City on November 7, 2025. He emphasized the critical role the Marines play in the country's disaster response operations.

Learning from Recent Disaster Response

President Marcos pointed to the Marine Corps' effective performance during recent calamities, specifically highlighting their swift disaster response operations in Palawan following Typhoon Tino. This demonstrated capability has positioned the Marines as essential first responders during natural disasters.

"We will once again rely on your readiness, your discipline, and your heart for service, as we brace for the upcoming weather and the typhoons," Marcos told the assembled Marines. "Help us secure our coast. Protect our people. Rebuild our communities."

National Calamity Declaration and Storm Warning

The President confirmed that the country has been placed under a state of national calamity to mobilize all government resources and ensure immediate relief and recovery for individuals affected by recent typhoons, including Typhoon Tino that caused severe damage in the Visayas region.

Marcos delivered a sobering warning about the approaching storm, noting that Uwan is "potentially stronger" than Typhoon Tino. The international name for Uwan is Fung-wong.

In his address, the President praised the courage and dedication of the Marine Corps, stating: "Courage is your heartbeat. When others hesitate, you step forward. You are among the first to fight. You are the last to rest."

Modernization and Future Preparedness

President Marcos assured the Marine Corps of his administration's commitment to modernizing their capabilities, recognizing that bravery alone cannot meet modern challenges.

"A marine who answers a call must never face tomorrow with yesterday's tools," Marcos emphasized. "Therefore, under my watch, we will continue to provide you the means to match the mandate that you bear."

The government's modernization plan includes:

  • Establishing strategic bases
  • Revitalizing the self-reliant defense posture program
  • Strengthening maritime domain awareness

The Philippine Marine Corps, serving as the naval infantry force of the Philippine Navy, provides fire and combined-arms support, coastal defense, and amphibious operations. Originally known as Alpha Company, the PMC was established on November 2, 1950 through AFP General Order 319 and officially became the PMC on November 7, 1995.

Since 1996, PMC operations have focused on land-based irregular warfare and marine security, particularly in the southern Philippines, while recent efforts have expanded to include humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations.
