Three Filipino archbishops are set to receive their pallium, a liturgical vestment, from Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter's Basilica on June 29, 2026, according to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). The archbishops are Albert Uy, Charlie Inzon, and David William Antonio.
Annual Vatican Tradition for New Metropolitan Archbishops
Each year, newly appointed metropolitan archbishops travel to the Vatican to receive the pallium, a white woolen band worn around the shoulders during Mass as a symbol of their authority and unity with the Pope. The CBCP confirmed that the three Filipino prelates are already in Rome for the ceremony.
Profiles of the Archbishops
Archbishop Albert Uy, 59, was appointed as the Archbishop of Cebu on September 30, 2025. Archbishop Charlie Inzon, 60, was named Archbishop of Cotabato on December 8, 2025. Archbishop David William Antonio, 62, became the Archbishop of Nueva Segovia on January 14, 2026.
Significance of the Pallium
The pallium is a white woolen vestment adorned with six black crosses, worn by archbishops during liturgical celebrations. It symbolizes the archbishop's jurisdiction and his communion with the Pope. The ceremony, held annually on June 29, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, is a longstanding tradition in the Catholic Church.
