More than 3,000 Muslims gathered at Plaza Independencia in Cebu City on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, to celebrate Eid al-Adha, one of the most significant religious celebrations in Islam. The event was marked by prayers, reflection, and communal gatherings, with Muslim leaders emphasizing unity, faith, and shared humanity.
Unity Among Diverse Muslims
Imam Nurdin Basang highlighted the theme of “pagkakaisa” or unity, noting that Muslims from different races and tribes come together as one despite cultural and social differences. He said the celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of unity in the Islamic faith.
Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” commemorates the devotion and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim to Allah. Ustadz Danny Salim C. Daham explained that the sermon delivered during the event is called the Khutbah, which often focuses on Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience. This story is central to the Qurban or Udhiyah tradition, emphasizing sacrifice in Islam.
Daham added that the event is rooted in the concept of Wahy, or divine revelation, referring to the guidance Prophet Ibrahim received through a dream instructing him to carry out the sacrifice. He also noted that the celebration is referred to as Hari Raya Haji or Hari Raya Korban in Southeast Asia, underscoring themes of obedience, sacrifice, and devotion.
City Government Support
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival reaffirmed the city government’s support for the Muslim community through various programs and facilities. Initiatives include a Muslim cemetery in Barangay Guba, dedicated facilities at the Cebu City Medical Center, and the establishment of a Halal kitchen in the city. The mayor also distributed coins to children during the gathering, demonstrating solidarity with the community.
