The Rizal Historic Trail was inaugurated in Wilhelmsfeld, Germany, on June 20, 2026, as part of the commemoration of Dr. Jose Rizal's 165th birth anniversary. The trail honors the national hero's life and travels during his stay in the country.
Trail Based on Rizal's Daily Route
The trail follows the route Rizal walked daily from Wilhelmsfeld to Heidelberg, where he studied ophthalmology in 1886. Senator Loren Legarda led the opening ceremony, which took place one day after Rizal's birthday.
In her message, Legarda emphasized the importance of keeping Rizal's memory alive not only in the Philippines but also in places abroad that shaped his life and heroism. She noted that Rizal's daily walks along this route reflected simple activities that later became part of his preparation for a greater role in Philippine history.
Activities and Future Plans
The program included a guided walk from Wilhelmsfeld to the Heidelberg University Eye Clinic, as well as the oath-taking of new members of the Knights of Rizal at the Evangelische Kirche Wilhelmsfeld. Legarda also assured support for maintaining the trail, including the installation of markers to guide and remind visitors of the site.
The opening of the Rizal Historic Trail is part of broader efforts to preserve and promote Rizal's legacy and the history of Filipinos in Germany for future generations.
