The city of Tagum in Davao del Norte has once again captured the Christmas spirit by lighting up its record-breaking giant holiday tree, solidifying its position as home to the tallest Christmas tree in the Philippines.
A Towering Symbol of Hope
On November 21, 2025, Tagum City officially illuminated its magnificent 231-foot Christmas tree at City Hall Square, marking a significant growth from previous years. This year's structure stands an impressive 29 feet taller than last year's 202-foot tree, continuing the city's tradition of annually increasing the tree's height.
During the lighting ceremony, Davao del Norte 1st District Representative De Carlo "Oyo" L. Uy emphasized that this annual tradition represents much more than just a festive display. He described it as a reflection of what Tagum stands for as a community, with each light symbolizing hope for every family in the city.
"Christmas is a celebration of faith because we believe that even the smallest light can break through the darkest night," Congressman Uy stated in his speech. "And this is a celebration of family because in every laughter, every gathering, every shared meal, there is love. And it is a celebration of love."
Carnival Extravaganza and Technical Marvel
This year's tree follows a vibrant carnival theme that brings joy and excitement to visitors. The spectacular design features:
- 189 hot air balloon decorations creating a festive atmosphere
- Fun carnival games set up at the base of the tree
- A Ferris wheel-inspired design crowning the top
The lighting system itself is an engineering marvel, utilizing:
- 1,881 boxes of rice bulbs creating brilliant illumination
- 3,567 meters of rope lights wrapping the massive structure
- 580 meters of LED strips enhancing the visual display
- 25 channels and 138 lighting combinations for dynamic shows
Growing Tradition and Community Spirit
Don Kryle Sy, officer of the Tagum City Information Office (Tagum CIO), explained the city's commitment to making the tree grow annually. "Padayon siya magkatubo, that's why nagatubo siya matag tuig (It keeps growing, that's why it grows every year)," Sy noted in an October 20, 2025 interview with SunStar Davao.
The growth pattern over recent years demonstrates this commitment:
- 2016: 172 feet
- 2019: 193 feet
- 2021: 195 feet
- 2023: 198 feet
- 2024: 202 feet
- 2025: 231 feet
The city expects massive crowds to witness this year's tree, following the success of the 2024 lighting ceremony that attracted approximately 30,000 people in a single night.
Safety Assurance and Additional Attractions
Following the powerful doublet earthquake that struck Manay, Davao Oriental on October 10, 2025, Sy assured the public that the holiday tree remains structurally sound. Engineers specifically designed the structure to withstand strong winds and ground movement, considering its outdoor installation.
"Gina-paninguha, ginasiguro gyud sa mga katawhan na ang disenyo karon luwas para sa tanan (People are really working hard and making sure that this year's design is safe for everyone)," Sy emphasized.
The lighting ceremony offered more than just the tree illumination, featuring:
- Entertaining performances by clowns, acrobats, and magicians
- The popular Avenida Food Bazaar with various food stalls
- The Mindanao Floriculture Exhibition showcasing and selling diverse plants
Congressman Uy concluded with a powerful message about the city's true strength: "Our strength has always been our togetherness. If there is one thing Tagum has proven again and again, it is that no storm is too strong for a united people."
The giant Christmas tree will continue to shine throughout the holiday season, serving as a beacon of hope and celebration for Tagumenyos and visitors alike.
