DOH Central Visayas Warns Against Self-Medication During Tino Flooding
DOH 7 Warns Against Antibiotic Misuse During Floods

The Department of Health Central Visayas (DOH 7) has issued a crucial public health warning amid the widespread flooding caused by Bagyong Tino, urging residents to avoid self-medication with antibiotics.

Strict Warning Against Antibiotic Misuse

In an official statement released on November 7, 2025, DOH Regional Director Joshua Brillantes emphasized that antibiotics should only be taken when prescribed by a qualified physician. The health agency specifically cautioned the public against taking any antibiotic medication without proper medical consultation and prescription.

Director Brillantes warned that improper use of antibiotics could lead to adverse health effects and contribute to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. This serious health concern occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread.

Leptospirosis Prevention and Proper Medication Use

The DOH 7 encouraged the public to visit their nearest health center for proper assessment and treatment if they experience symptoms or suspect they might have contracted leptospirosis. This waterborne disease becomes a significant concern during flooding situations as it spreads through water contaminated with animal urine.

Health authorities specifically addressed the use of doxycycline, an antibiotic commonly used for leptospirosis prevention. The DOH 7 stressed that doxycycline should only be taken under medical supervision, despite its role in preventing the potentially fatal disease.

Potential Side Effects of Improper Medication

According to the health department, incorrect use of antibiotics can cause various side effects that may compromise health during already challenging flood conditions. These potential adverse reactions include:

  • Abdominal pain and stomach discomfort
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Severe allergic reactions in rare cases

The DOH 7's timely warning comes as Central Visayas residents face health risks from floodwaters brought by Bagyong Tino. The department emphasized that professional medical consultation remains the safest approach to address health concerns during this period.
