Five people were killed in a series of Israeli air strikes and drone attacks in southern Lebanon on Saturday, June 20, just hours after a ceasefire between Israel and the Hezbollah group took effect.
Attacks Hit Nabatieh Area
According to Lebanese state media, Israeli warplanes and drones launched attacks on the Nabatieh area overnight through Saturday morning. The bombings damaged several residential buildings and homes. Israel also fired artillery into Nabatieh and surrounding areas before dawn.
The ceasefire agreement was reached on Friday between Israel and Hezbollah following intense fighting in Lebanon. A senior Israeli official and two Hezbollah sources confirmed the deal, which officially took effect at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
Ceasefire Violation
The attacks mark a significant violation of the truce, raising tensions just hours after the cessation of hostilities was supposed to begin. The Lebanese government has not yet issued an official statement on the strikes, but local officials condemned the violence.
Hezbollah sources indicated that the group would not immediately retaliate, but warned that continued Israeli aggression could jeopardize the ceasefire. The Israeli military has not commented on the specific incidents.
