Cebu Hosts 48th ASEAN Summit: A Test of Readiness and Pride
Cebu Hosts 48th ASEAN Summit: A Test of Readiness

Starting today, May 6, until May 8, 2026, the entire region will witness the holding of the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Lapu-Lapu City. This hosting is not just a simple pride for Cebuanos, but a significant test of our capacity as a world-class destination. Along with this comes the heavy responsibility of proving that Cebu is ready to take on an even bigger role on the international stage.

International Media Center Opens

Amid all this, the International Media Center (IMC) at Mactan Newtown was formally opened on Tuesday, May 5. This facility, equipped with modern workstations and fast internet, will serve as the heart of information. Under the management of the Presidential Communications Office through Secretary Dave Gomez, it is ensured that every news—from serious economic discussions to global security challenges such as the tensions in the Middle East—will be transmitted immediately to various parts of the world.

Media Presence and Cultural Showcase

An estimated 800 to 1,000 local and foreign journalists are expected to come to Cebu to cover the summit. This is an opportunity to showcase Cebu's culture, the rapid development of our economy, and the skill of our leaders in managing world-class events.

However, hosting a diplomatic meeting attended by 11 countries requires great sacrifice and tight security.

Security Measures and Declarations

The declaration of Malacañang through Proclamation No. 1238, which sets May 6 to 8 as "special non-working days" in Lapu-Lapu and Cordova, is a strategic move. This is not just a vacation for employees, but a way to ease traffic and ensure the smooth movement of delegates on the streets.

A total gun ban and the suspension of the Permit to Carry Firearms Outside Residence (PTCFOR) in the entire province are also being implemented until May 11. This shows that our government leaves nothing to chance in terms of safety. Around 7,300 security personnel have been deployed, with the send-off ceremony at the Mactan Shrine on Saturday led by PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., demonstrating the strength of Task Group Central Visayas. From police, soldiers, firefighters, and traffic enforcers, to the Philippine Coast Guard and Presidential Security Command, their presence will serve as a strong shield against any ill intent.
