Framework Agreement Signed in Washington
Israel and Lebanon signed a framework agreement in Washington, D.C., on June 27, 2026, following several days of negotiations aimed at ending the conflict between the Israeli military and the Hezbollah group. The trilateral document was signed by Lebanese Ambassador Nada Moawad and her Israeli counterpart, Yechiel Leiter, along with a representative from the United States State Department.
Key Provisions of the Agreement
According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the agreement allows Israeli forces to continue occupying southern Lebanon if Hezbollah fails to disarm. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States will assist in implementing the accord through a Trilateral Military Coordination Group for Lebanon. The US will also provide resources, including an immediate $100 million in humanitarian assistance in coordination with the United Nations.
Lebanon's Perspective
Lebanese Ambassador Nada Moawad hailed the agreement as a crucial first step toward restoring Lebanon's sovereignty. The conflict escalated after Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel on March 2, 2026, days after the US and Israel attacked Iran. Israel responded with extensive air and ground attacks, resulting in over 4,000 deaths in Lebanon and displacing more than one million residents.
