A 20-year-old woman, identified only as alias "Shaira," was taken into police custody early Tuesday morning after causing a major disturbance during a revered religious event in Cebu City.
Sacred Procession Disrupted by Drunken Outburst
The incident occurred along Osmeña Boulevard in Barangay Sambag 2 at approximately 5:00 in the morning on January 8, 2026. Shaira, reportedly heavily intoxicated, began causing chaos amid the solemn "Walk with Jesus" penitential walk. According to initial investigations, she lost control of her actions near Harrison Park.
Witnesses described her shouting in the middle of the road, kicking and damaging parked motorcycles, and even spitting at devotees who were participating in the sacred procession. Her behavior escalated when authorities arrived, leading to a physical struggle as she resisted their attempts to intervene.
Suspect Cites Personal Struggles and Academic Pressure
Following her arrest and booking, Shaira offered an explanation for her actions. The suspect, a native of Negros who currently resides in Barangay Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City, confessed that personal problems drove her to drink.
She specifically pointed to the immense pressure of her studies as a Law Student and an anxiety attack as the primary reasons behind her intoxication and subsequent breakdown. Despite her emotional state, she expressed deep remorse for her conduct.
"She asked for forgiveness for what she did and promised to pay for all the damages to the motorcycles she kicked," a report from the scene stated. This offer of restitution, however, does not negate the legal consequences of her actions.
Legal Charges Filed Despite Apology
Her apology did not prevent the filing of formal charges. Shaira remains in detention and is set to face at least two criminal cases in court.

These charges stem directly from her physical resistance against the responding officers and the willful damage she caused to private property during the early morning incident.
