Newborn Baby Miraculously Survives After Being Abandoned in Eco-Bag in Cebu City
A newborn baby girl was miraculously rescued after being found abandoned in an eco-bag along a roadside in Gotianuy, Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City early Tuesday morning, January 20, 2026. The infant was discovered wrapped in cardboard inside the bag, still bleeding when residents and authorities arrived at the scene.
Shocking Discovery by School Caretaker
According to a witness known as Jen, a caretaker at a local school in the area, she was shocked upon exiting the gate at 7:00 AM due to the large crowd and presence of an ambulance. Jen revealed that she had seen the yellow-green eco-bag earlier but assumed it was trash. In fact, she had even placed it on top of some grass she had swept to be collected later by the garbage truck. She never expected that it contained a newborn with blood inside.
Quick Response Saves Infant's Life
Police assigned to Mango Avenue quickly responded along with residents. Fortunately, the baby was still alive when found and was promptly taken to Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) for immediate medical attention. The swift action by authorities and community members played a crucial role in ensuring the infant's survival.
Witness Account Sheds Light on Mother's Situation
Another witness, known as Marie, a friend of the suspected mother of the baby, provided details to the police about the incident. Marie stated that her friend had come to the city to witness the Sinulog festival and stayed at her rented place. The mother had informed her that she was only five months pregnant and thought she was merely experiencing bleeding. However, after the mother went to the bathroom, she began bleeding heavily and discarded something by the roadside before taking a taxi to the hospital.
It was there that Marie discovered it was a baby that had been discarded when she checked the area and found the infant moving and crying. This heartbreaking account highlights the desperate circumstances that may have led to the abandonment, underscoring the need for better support systems for vulnerable individuals in such situations.
