Senior Citizen in Cebu Details Harrowing 'Budol-Budol' Gang Scam

A 60-year-old senior citizen from Barangay Basak San Nicolas in Cebu has bravely come forward to expose a distressing experience at the hands of a notorious 'Budol-Budol' gang, aiming to educate the public and prevent similar incidents. The victim, identified as Murillo, lost jewelry valued at approximately P70,000 in a sophisticated scam that unfolded on January 30, 2026, but he only recently decided to fully disclose the details to serve as a crucial lesson for others, particularly fellow senior citizens.

The Elaborate Scam Unfolds

According to Murillo, the incident began with a seemingly innocent inquiry while he was riding a jeepney bound for Katipunan. A woman wearing a veil approached him, asking for assistance in finding a vehicle to rent for transporting solar panels from Dumaguete. When Murillo declined, another woman suddenly intervened, promising him free solar panels to reduce his electricity bills, luring him into a false sense of security.

In Barangay Punta, the suspects convinced Murillo to hold a green eco-bag, which they claimed contained P200,000 in cash. As a precautionary measure, they requested his gold necklace, two gold rings, and his Senior Citizen's ID, allegedly to safeguard the items. Murillo, trusting their assurances, handed over his valuables.

The Shocking Discovery

While waiting at a fast-food chain, the suspects vanished without a trace. When Murillo opened the eco-bag, he was stunned and heartbroken to find only crumpled Grade 3 paper inside instead of the promised money. Reflecting on the ordeal, he stated, 'I had no idea what was happening because she already took my ring and my necklace. She just said we should meet at Jollibee and wait because the rental price would be high if I accompanied them.' This revelation underscores the gang's manipulative tactics and the emotional toll on victims.

Murillo's decision to speak out highlights the ongoing threat posed by such fraudsters in urban areas like Cebu. Authorities urge the public, especially vulnerable groups like seniors, to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities immediately to prevent further victimization.
