Catholic Church Calls on Faithful to Deepen Spiritual Practices for Ash Wednesday and Lent
The Catholic Church has issued a heartfelt appeal to all Catholics to actively participate in and embody the true essence of Ash Wednesday, which heralds the commencement of the 40-day Lenten season. This call was made during a Mass led by Msgr. Bernardo Pantin, Secretary General of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), at the Manila Cathedral.
Emphasizing Core Obligations: Fasting and Abstinence
In his homily, Msgr. Pantin underscored the critical importance of two key obligations for Catholics: fasting and abstinence. He clarified that fasting is mandatory for Catholics aged 18 to 59, while abstinence applies to those aged 14 and older. For fasting, individuals are permitted to consume only one full meal throughout the day, supplemented by two smaller meals that, when combined, do not exceed the size of a single full meal.
Regarding abstinence, the consumption of meat—such as pork, beef, and chicken—is strictly prohibited, with fish and seafood being the typical alternatives. These practices are deemed essential not only for Ash Wednesday but also throughout the approaching Holy Week, serving as a means to demonstrate self-discipline, foster spiritual growth, seek forgiveness for sins, and express sincerity in faith.
Introducing Digital Media Fasting for Modern Devotion
Beyond traditional practices, Msgr. Pantin also highlighted the concept of digital media fasting, as outlined in a pastoral letter from the CBCP. He noted that excessive focus on social media often leads individuals to neglect their personal obligations, family duties, and church commitments. Therefore, he urged the faithful to temporarily avoid social media platforms, dedicating more time to self-reflection, family bonding, and spiritual connection with God.
This holistic approach aims to integrate ancient traditions with contemporary challenges, encouraging a more profound and meaningful observance of Lent. By combining prayer, fasting, meditation, and sacrifice, the Catholic Church seeks to guide believers toward a transformative spiritual journey during this sacred period.
