In a significant move to support the transport sector, Congressman Carmelo "Pogi" Lazatin Jr. has announced a major rice donation initiative for drivers in Pampanga's First District. A total of 19,629 tricycle and jeepney operators and drivers are set to receive five kilos of rice each, funded by a P2 million donation from the lawmaker.
Distribution Details and Beneficiary Breakdown
The rice distribution is scheduled to commence in the first week of May 2026. Lazatin, along with his team, will personally visit terminals in Angeles City, Mabalacat City, and Magalang town to hand over the assistance directly to the recipients. This hands-on approach underscores the congressman's commitment to ensuring the aid reaches those in need.
The beneficiaries include 17,074 members of various Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations (TODA) and 2,555 members of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Associations (JODA). This targeted support aims to cover a broad spectrum of the local transport workforce, which plays a crucial role in sustaining economic activity across the region.
Addressing Economic Hardships Amid Fuel Price Increases
Lazatin emphasized the vital role of drivers in keeping the economy moving, noting that many continue to face financial struggles due to rising fuel costs. He described the initiative as providing "modest but meaningful" relief to the transport sector, which has been hit hard by recent price surges.
According to the Department of Energy (DOE), fuel prices have escalated dramatically in recent months. From February 24 to March 30, 2026, diesel prices rose by as much as 50 percent, while gasoline prices increased between 34 to 43 percent. These spikes are attributed to geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, highlighting the global factors impacting local livelihoods.
Historical Context and Sourcing of the Rice
This is not the first time Lazatin has engaged in such charitable efforts. He revealed that he started rice distribution during his tenure as Angeles City mayor, regularly providing five kilos of rice to drivers as a personal holiday gift. This ongoing commitment reflects his long-standing dedication to supporting the community.
The rice for this project was sourced through Biotop Philippines Agriculture Company, Inc., a firm owned by Lazatin's family. This connection ensures a reliable supply chain for the donation, facilitating the efficient execution of the initiative.
By combining personal philanthropy with strategic sourcing, Lazatin's project aims to deliver timely assistance to thousands of drivers, offering a buffer against the economic pressures exacerbated by volatile fuel markets. The initiative serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of local actions and global events in shaping everyday lives.
