The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is closely monitoring the progress of the impeachment trial in the Senate, according to Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, head of the Episcopal Commission on Inter-Religious Dialogue.
Inter-Religious Council Formed
Bishop Bagaforo stated that the Catholic Church, together with other religious sects, has previously established the 'Inter-religious Leaders’ Council for National Transformation.' This council actively monitors social issues, including the impeachment trial.
Church's Stance on Accountability
On the part of the Catholic Church, Bishop Bagaforo emphasized that its position remains to hold anyone suspected or accused of committing any crime accountable, regardless of their position. He clarified that the Church is not condemning the vice president nor taking a stand in support of any official.
Desire for Rule of Law
Instead, the Church only wants the law to prevail and the constitutional process to be followed. The Catholic leader also urged the public and fellow Church servants to let the impeachment process proceed while monitoring the events in the impeachment court.
Justice and Accountability
Bishop Bagaforo noted that this is part of the Church's teaching on the existence of justice and accountability—two of the main advocacies of the Catholic Church.
