CBCP: VP Sara Impeachment Must Follow Constitution

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has firmly stated that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte must continue in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law. In a statement on July 10, 2026, Kidapawan Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo emphasized that the Catholic Church does not take sides for or against the Vice President but is committed to ensuring that legal processes are followed.

Church's Stance on Due Process

Bishop Bagaforo clarified that the Church's primary goal is to uphold the rule of law and allow the impeachment process to proceed through proper channels. He stressed the importance of justice and accountability for government officials, especially in light of corruption allegations. "Leaders of the nation must be held accountable for the trust bestowed upon them by the people," Bagaforo said.

Call for National Unity

The CBCP acknowledged that the impeachment trial has deepened political divisions among Filipinos. Bagaforo called for unity, urging the public to prioritize the common good over "personal politics." He noted, "Truly, we are very divided now. Our nation has many colors—red, pink, yellow, green. Our prayer is that we may unite." The Church continues to serve as the "moral conscience" of the nation as the Senate proceeds with the impeachment hearings.
